The New School Year

Thank you everyone for your comments and posts. I wish I was keeping up on the blog better. It has been a hard year. I hope in the future to be able to complete book two and move on to book three.

Hello Alia,
I am happy to see you post today! I left you a comment the other day for the first time. My kids are enjoying putting together their lapbook for book 2. I wanted to email you privately, but I can't find your email address anywhere. I am wondering if I can help you. I LOVE making flapbooks and would love to finish the remaining chapters of Volume 2 and offer them free of charge on my blog. I have never put anything on my blog to download, so that would be the only thing I might need some direction on. Wondering if that would be helpful to you or if you are planning to finish this year on your own. Just thought I would throw the idea out there. My email address is johnstonhouse@gmail.com. Why You're Here

Unless you're my mother coming to see pics of my cute kids then you're here becuase of the OCD manner in which I document our journey through Story of the World.

Here's how the blog works. There are tabs for pages at the top, that gives you lists of resources for volumes one and two. Use the tag "ancient civilizations" to find posts that talk about internet links, recipes, movies and books we use for each chapter in volume one. For the same infomation for volume two, use the tag "middle ages". Use the tag "history projects" to see pictures of all the activities we do (click on the collages to make them bigger.) Use the tag "history" to see all SOTW related posts. The "pages" tab along the top is for SOTW related information and resources, the side bar is more generic homeschooling stuff for our family and in general- I do go off topic sometimes!

Where are we? Well that got a little confusing for some people so here is the clarification. We started with SOTW at the beginning on the 08/09 school year and around chapter 20-something we relocated and dropped it all together. I then formed a class with area homeschoolers for the 2009/2010 year and of course everyone wanted to start at the beginning, so my family started over again. We're on a pretty tight one-chapter-a-week schedule and will be completing SOTW volume two by July 2011.

Yes, I know you're drooling over the fact that I get to do this with a class and therefore it makes all the time and effort worth it, and you think there is no way you could have as much fun with your kids on your own. Well you're wrong! First of all before I started our class I WAS having this much fun with my kids, but a class IS nice. It gives you accountability to get it all done and helps the kids who aren't project kids get excited about projects and helps the kids who aren't book kids to get into the reading and writing. You don't even need a homeschooling community to do it- just grab some after-schoolers and HAVE FUN!

Who We Are

My kids:

YaYa is 9 and is registered as a third grader for the 10/11 school year but is all over the board in ability and all her peers are in fourth grade. She's my English kid- reading and writing are her niches.

Bee is 6 and is registered for Kindergarten. Again, his ability in academic areas varies. He's my math kid: big on figures, problem solving, building and planning.

Bit is 3 and shows an interested in early reading and writing skills and we'll being doing some fun pre-K things for the 10/11 school year. She's also a devoted tag-along in all things educational.

I'm a 30 year old, second generation homeschooling mother to these three brilliant ninnies. I am a Certified Lactation Counselor working for WIC part time both from home and out of the home. I have been married 11 years to a man who is both a saint (okay, not literally) and my best friend. We are a green, crunchy, holistic and Eastern Orthodox Christian family living in the Finger Lakes Region in NY. We're blessed by living in a diverse small town with a vast homeschooling community, 5% of children in our district are educated at home.
